Fears and Phobias
A FEAR is defined as “An unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain or harm”. Although unpleasant, fear is important to us because it activates our survival mechanism, otherwise known as our fight, flight or freeze response; this means that our bodies are prepared to either fight (physically or verbally) a perceived threat, run away from it or literally freeze and curl up into a ball.
A PHOBIA is defined as “An extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something. A phobia is therefore a fear in its extreme form and involves an individual changing their behaviour to keep themselves “safe from a perceived threat”.
Now we all have things that we’re afraid of … But when these fears start to impact our day to day life then they must be dealt with.
