Hypnotherapy for Anxiety
Anxiety is a natural human response when we feel that we are under threat. It can be experienced through our thoughts, feelings and physical sensations.
The purpose of Anxiety is to help prepare the body for action. This is known as the Fight or Flight response and is the body's way of helping you in dangerous situations.
Anxiety becomes a problem when it is experienced, inappropriately, intensely and interferes with a persons daily life.
Anxiety disorders can be loosely grouped into 3 categories:-
- Generalised anxiety
- Panic disorder
- Phobias
These do tend to overlap considerably and it is not uncommon for people to have features of several of the disorders.
You
If you're suffering with Generalised Anxiety Disorder; symptoms can include:-
- Inner tension, agitation
- Fear of losing control
- Dread that something serious is going to happen
- Irritability
- Feelings of detachment
- Racing heartbeat
- Breathing fast
- Short of breath
- Dry mouth
- Butterflies in the stomach
- Feeling sick
- Urge to pass urine
- Tremor / and sweating
If you're suffering with Generalised Anxiety the symptoms you experience can often be present for much of the time and not restricted to specific situations.
If You find yourself suffering with Panic Disorder then you may well be experiencing Panic Attacks which can occur unpredictably and often without obvious cause. These attacks consist of severe anxiety with physical and psychological symptoms. They can be terrifying and people often report feeling as if they are having a heart attack or cannot breath.
Should You find yourself with a Phobia then what you have is a fear that is out of proportion to the situation that causes it and cannot be explained away. You may well find yourself avoiding the feared situation, since this helps to reduce the anxiety.
Some phobias represent heightened normal anxiety towards situations that people are evolutionarily "prepared" to fear, e.g. heights.
In other instances, a phobia may arise by a non threatening situation being associated with a traumatic experience. For example having a car crash whilst on holiday in France may lead to phobia of driving abroad, foreign holidays or even driving altogether.
Phobias typically occur in specific situations, e.g. fear of dentists. People experience "anticipatory anxiety" when thinking of the situation and so attempt to avoid it.
Simple phobias are phobias that are specific to objects or situations. These can include:-
- Animal phobias - e.g. dogs
- Blood - the fear of / or sight of
- Needle / other sharp objects
- Vertigo - fear of heights
- Agoraphobia - an intense fear of leaving the house; being in crowded spaces, travelling on public transport and being in a place that is difficult to leave. Commonly occurs with Panic Attacks and is often associated with depression.
- Social phobia - a fear of social interaction with others, talking to people, eating, drinking and speaking in public. Social phobia is often a symptom of depression
